There’s a common misperception that domestic abuse victims stay in harm’s way out of weakness. In reality, 50% stay to protect the most vulnerable thing in their lives - their pets.

70% of domestic abusers threaten their victim’s pets. 50% of victims stay if they can’t get their pets to safety. Tragically, only 17% of DV shelters can take pets.

To help Purina’s Purple Leash Project change the narrative around the issue, we partnered with “Fearless Girl” sculptor Kristen Visbal to craft a different and overlooked story of courage.

“Courageous Together” depicts the brave first steps of a survivor and her beloved dog. The sculpture debuted in Time’s Square NYC and instantly ignited mass awareness of the crucial role of pets in surviving domestic violence and the bond between humans and their pets.

Awareness has driven action. The sculpture continues to help raise funds for the Purple Leash Project and Red Rover, who help shelters become pet-friendly. And Law and Order actress and abuse survivor Mariska Hargitay was so moved by the sculpture, she’s become an avid spokesperson for the project.
